Good morning, fam! I’m back! Monsoon season is killing my fibro, so my brain is finally working again.
Ahem…
Today, let’s talk about how to care for your depressed person.
What do you say to someone who is depressed and has given up?
“I’m here for you.”
And mean it.
Because it can be exhausting to be there for someone who you see as worthwhile who can’t see it themselves.
As someone who has been in that dark place, I didn’t need someone to tell me why I should stay. After all, I was already so convinced that anyone who said that was doing so out of obligation, not because they believed it.
What I really needed was someone who didn’t want to fix me, but to be there with me until I could find my way back out of that whirlpool.
Let me vent, even it turns into a crying mess of things you’ve heard from me before.
Sit and doomscroll with me. Or read a book.
Send me funny memes and videos. Not ones about depression.
Remind me to eat, hydrate and take my meds. Be firm with me, but not pushy.
If I have a therapist, ask when I see them next. If I don’t, ask if I want help getting an appointment.
Don’t try to motivate me by reminding me of all the things I have to do (aside from caring for children and/or pets)
Give me hugs
Tell me you love me. (And don’t expect a response… words are hard sometimes)
Remember that every depressed person is different. Ask your depressed person for their specific needs, don’t argue about the validity of their asks and seriously, just be there.
And if you’re the depressed person, share this with your loved ones.
What would you add?
Until next time…
Love,
Your Mom
Everyone needs to read this! I love you ❤️
All great advice!
